Former police chief to lead Starmer’s crusade against small boats

The government has appointed a former police chief to lead Starmer’s crusade against small boats.

Martin Hewitt, former chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), previously coordinated action by UK police forces on issues including terrorism and organised crime.

Now he will lead the UK’s new Border Security Command, charged with tackling small boat crossings from Europe to this country by people hoping to migrate here illegally or claim asylum.

The aim is to tackle the illegal smuggling gangs who charge people to cross the Channel in boats.

Mr Hewitt’s first act in his new role is to accompany Starmer to Italy for a fact-gathering meeting with right-wing prime minister Giorgia Meloni, who has succeeded in reducing the number of people travelling to her country from Tunisia and Libya by nearly two-thirds.

It seems she has done this by getting her – and the EU’s – chequebook out.

The EU has given Tunisia funding to boost border security, while Italy has supplied patrol vessels and given the government money to support small companies and invest in education and renewable energy.

Italy also has a deal to send migrants rescued at sea to Albania while their asylum claims are processed. Unlike the former Tory government’s deal with Rwanda, those whose claims are successful will be allowed to return to Italy; unsuccessful claimants will be deported.

This Writer is on the record as saying Starmer’s approach is better than that of his predecessor, Rishi Sunak – he is rightly targeting the people-smugglers, rather than penalising the people being smuggled.

But he could do more. Simply opening up safe, legal routes for asylum-seekers to enter the UK would be a great start, because it would invalidate the claims of most people coming by illegal means.
