Why are some politicians determined to mess up the hospitality industry?
A few weeks ago, they were trying to stop people smoking in beer gardens, giving pubs that open directly onto public highways an advantage among the social-smoker set because they hadn’t thought it through.
Now they want to cut pubs’ takings on beverages served in pint glasses by 10 per cent, by serving those drinks in glasses that are only two-thirds the size.

The claim is that this will help combat cancer and other issues connected with excessive drinking. But we already have a mechanism for stopping excessive drinking – it’s called bar staff.
Anyone serving at a pub can cut a customer off if they only look as though they are drinking to excess. Service in any such establishment is entirely at the staff’s discretion.
Not only that, but while the study on which the claim is based found the amount of beer that was sold fell by eight per cent, wine sales shot up by seven per cent. So what drinkers lost on the swings, they took back on the roundabouts, it seems.
And it should be hugely telling that of 1,700 pubs, bars and restaurants that were asked to take part on the study, only 13 agreed to do so – despite offers of compensation for lost sales.
Thankfully, the Labour government is not likely to cave in to pressure to get rid of the pint. While there are plans to encourage healthier lifestyles, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said Labour does not want to become the “fun police”.
