Councils have lashed back against Labour's housing target

New housing could overwhelm local services

The law of unforeseen consequences swings into action once again today, as councils are claiming that new housing could overwhelm local services.

The Labour government wants to encourage housebuilding, with plans for development in rural areas and small towns – away from city centres.

But research by councils has shown that they may not have the resources to provide the essential services that people moving into those new houses may need.

According to the County Councils Network, local authorities will see a 56 per cent rise in the number of new dwellings required to be built in their wards – equivalent to 64,000 homes per year.

But after 14 years of Conservative cuts, councils say they don’t even have the infrastructure to provide proper services for the residents they have already.

The BBC quotes Richard Clewer, the CCN’s housing spokesman, who said:

“Much of this development in county areas will be in the places with limited or no public transport, compared to the benefits of building in or around cities where there is already good infrastructure.”

Labour says its proposals mean infrastructure will be provided alongside housing. A spokesperson said the government would “work in partnership with councils to create the vital infrastructure that people need in their communities”.

Does this mean funding will flow back into local authorities? If not, how does the government expect its plan to work?

Huge sprawling housing estates have been built over the years with no thought of infrastucture and this must end.
Where I live has one small shop, a Doctor’s Surgery a Chinese Takeaway and Two Pubs to cater for 1000+ homes and Two more Estates have been built in Green Fields with no addtional resources, with more planned.
Retail Parks are 5/10 min drive away and the nearest Bus Stop 1/2 a mile away.
Providing you have a car or are Physically Mobile it’s OK but as the population ages it leaves many people isolated.
