Kuennsberg, her briefing notes and Boris Johnson add up to incompetence

Laura Kuennsberg, her briefing notes and Boris Johnson add up to incompetence – not a conspiracy.

Here’s what has happened in her own words:

Commentators have been quick to leap on this, suggesting that Kuenssberg, being a Tory, may habitually hand her notes to Tory MPs and grandees so they have prior warning of what they’ll be asked and can prepare – or that she is incompetent and the interview should go ahead, conducted by someone like Victoria Derbyshire.

Neither is realistic.

If Kuenssberg was habitually conspiring with Tories by handing them her notes about what she’d be asking them, she would not have confessed it now – would she? What would be the point of that?

And it is unrealistic to suggest that the interview should be carried out be someone else because Johnson would still have had prior warning of what he would be asked.

We are left with an accusation of incompetence – and even that is only a possibility.

Everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes they’re small things – I left my mobile phone in the living room last night, meaning I missed my morning alarm when it went off. It’s no biggie. Sometimes they’re more serious – Kuenssberg sent briefing notes for an interview with Boris Johnson to Johnson himself.

So the best that can be said about this is that it is a warning bell, and a close eye will have to be kept on Kuenssberg for any further… indiscretions.
