Parts of the UK are already ankle-deep in sewage – and will floods spread the effluent?
Here’s UK peer Prem Sikka:
He’s referring to a story about Colwall, a village in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Herefordshire/Worcestershire border that is known for its spring water – but may soon be better-known for the sewage springing out all over the area.

It seems a treatment works on Cradley Brook, near the village, spilled sewage for 1,756 hours in 2021 and 1,361 hours in 2022. Analysis suggests there were 72 unlawful spills in 2021 and 2022 -although Severn Trent said the works were operating in line with permit conditions.
But it seems the village was left “ankle deep in sewage” earlier this year because of a pipeline failure, according to one villager.
And now we learn that persistent underfunding by the Tories has left flood defences in England in their worst condition since records began.
Around 5.5 million properties in England are at risk of flooding, according to the Environment Agency, which has increased spending on flood defence maintenance and repair by £36 million (to £236 million).
England has just waded through its wettest 18 months on record, the country has had an “unusually wet September”, and we’re apparently heading into another wet week now.
Oh, and there are hurricanes on the way, too.
If sewage companies are overwhelmed, they’ll be dumping overflows directly into rivers that are flooding and… well, you can guess the rest.
If your home is likely to be flooded, it might not be just water seeping into your prized possessions and family heirlooms.
It’s good to see Labour floods minister Emma Hardy taking this seriously – but is it already too late to stop more damage being done?
