Anti-Zionist beliefs are now protected under UK law

Anti-Zionist beliefs are now protected under UK law after an employment tribunal ruled that university lecturer David Miller was unfairly dismissed.

The tribunal made its ruling in February, but has now published its 120-page judgment setting out why Professor Miller’s beliefs deserve protection under anti-discrimination laws.

This means that the belief that Israel’s actions amount to apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide are “worthy of respect in a democratic society”.

Prof Miller had told the tribunal he believed Zionism to be “inherently racist, imperialist and colonial” and that it was “ideologically bound to lead to the practices of apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide in pursuit of territorial control and expansion”.

Crucially, the tribunal agreed that this does not equate to opposition to or hatred of Jews.

Social media platforms like Facebook should take note: they should not censor those of us who protest against Israel’s genocidal military operations as we now have a legal ruling that our belief is justified.

(In practice, I doubt they will pay any attention; they seem to have a vested interest in promoting the falsehood that Israel is merely defending itself, in the face of evidence like Monday’s (October 14) attack on a hospital that caused a fire in which patients burned to death.)

The tribunal did say that the way Prof Miller expressed his beliefs publicly had been “extraordinary and ill-judged”, referring to an email to the university’s student newspaper sent in February 2021 in which Miller said: “Zionism is and always has been a racist, violent, imperialist ideology premised on ethnic cleansing,” and also claimed the university’s Jewish Society was an “Israel lobby group”.

The panel found what Miller said in his email “contributed to and played a material part in his dismissal”. As a result, whatever compensation he is awarded will be halved. His compensation will be decided later at a remedy hearing.

Personally, This Writer cannot see how the assertions quoted by the tribunal should count against him; the first is simply a reiteration of his main belief and the second is justified because the complaint against him was made by members of the university’s Union of Jewish Students and may be interpreted as a political attempt to silence a critic of Israel’s military crimes.

The ruling his been welcomed by many, with some expressing the hope that Prof Miller will now be able to secure a large compensation settlement from the university. Here’s a selection showing the strength of feeling on this:

For what it’s worth, as another victim who was once falsely accused of anti-Semitism for expressing the same beliefs – and having met Prof Miller and discussed his views with him – This Writer is right on his side and I hope the initial compensation decision is enormous so that, even after it is halved in accordance with the tribunal’s ruling, it is crippling.

That is what this establishment deserves. One would have expected authorities at one of the UK’s top universities to have thought for themselves, rather than slavishly accepting the propaganda of the warmongers.
