Let's stop pretending Israel is defending itself

Let’s stop pretending Israel is defending itself

Here’s an idea: let’s stop pretending Israel is defending itself.

Labour’s Emily Thornberry [pictured], who chairs the Commons’ Foreign Affairs Select Committee, mouthed those words in a Channel 4 News interview yesterday, but immediately admitted that it is no longer a convincing line.

It might have been, on October 7, 2023, but Israeli military actions since then have made it abundantly clear that the response to Hamas has nothing to do with defence.

And there has been an angry response to Thornberry for using those words:

For balance: Israel has claimed that the attack on Al-Aqsa Hospital was because Hamas was hiding terrorists there – but has provided absolutely no evidence to support the claim and it should therefore be taken as just another in the steady stream of lies that have issued from that country’s military and government over the last year and more.

In fairness to Thornberry, who has spent most of the time between October 7, 2023 and now defending Israel’s genocide: she does seem to be having second thoughts now.

But that just shows up the poverty of discussion about Israel’s actions.

Thornberry and others have spent months parroting a glib falsehood about Israel that they thought they could use as a shield. Now the evidence against it has mounted to such a level that it is impossible to deny.

Isn’t it now time to admit what has been obvious to some of us since only days after the October 7 attack?

Isn’t it time to stop pretending Israel is defending itself and admit it is committing war crimes, that the UK should cut all support for it – and, indeed, should play our part in dragging those responsible for ordering those crimes to The Hague to face justice?
