Is Keir Starmer really prioritising schools used by pensioners? Apparently that’s what he claimed in one of a series of local radio interviews.

According to the BBC, he was defending – again – the decision to cut the Winter Fuel Payment for millions of senior citizens, making it means-tested, with receipt of Pension Credit being the way to get it.

He said it was important to protect pensioners who most needed the allowance, but many did not need it because they were “relatively wealthy”.

He argued the government’s finances were “really, really difficult”, and the government had to prioritise delivering for the NHS, schools and other public services used by pensioners.

This Writer would like to know how many pensioners actually go to school. I know some of them may have a condition that is often described as “second childhood” but I don’t think it is to be taken literally.

Alternatively: he misspoke. He was groping for something material to say and the thought of education popped into his head. It does, after all, take a very large proportion of public spending and the last Tory government left schools in a terrible state, with many crumbling to pieces.

But we need better from our prime minister. He should be accurate with his comments to the media because they will be reported accurately and inaccuracies like this will be questioned.

And in the current febrile atmosphere, the last thing he needs is to be described as “misleading”.
