Met’s mistake makes it easy for ‘honeytrap’ victims

This is bad news for the Bow Street Plodders because the Met’s mistake makes it easy for ‘honeytrap’ victims to organise against it.

Here’s the gist, courtesy of the BBC:

The Metropolitan Police has apologised to victims of the Westminster “honeytrap” scandal after it accidentally sent an email which named all of them.

The force said it was referring itself to data watchdog the Information Commissioner over the breach.

The Met is investigating flirtatious messages being sent by someone calling themselves “Charlie” or “Abi” to as many as 20 people including MPs, staffers and political journalists.

A detective sent potential victims an email updating them on the case, but inadvertently copied in all of those involved, revealing to the recipients their names and email addresses.

One of the victims is said to have told the BBC it was infuriating to have their personal details released in this way and it would make them think twice about reporting anything to the Met again.

That may be so, but if there is a legal case to be made against the Met by these people, for publicising their names and connection with this case, then at least they all have the names and email addresses of everybody else involved and can mount a united, class action, lawsuit.

I mention this merely in passing.
