Are you boycotting Gladiator 2 for cutting out a Palestinian actress?

The racism is palpable here so are you boycotting Gladiator 2 for cutting out a Palestinian actress?

May Calamawy, who made a huge impression in Marvel’s Moon Knight a couple of years ago, was announced as having a major role when Ridley Scott’s swords-and-sandals sequel went before the lens – but in the finished film she has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance only, with no dialogue

The loss of her entire storyline has been attributed to racism by the film-makers, and to her public support for the people of Gaza (which should not be entirely unexpected from a person of Palestinian descent). Apparently, she has been publicising Israel’s genocide of Palestine for many years.

Fortunately – for all involved – it seems rumours that she was replaced by Israeli actress Yuval Ronen were untrue. It seems both were cast before Gladiator 2 began filming and were photographed together during the making of the movie. They also follow each other on Instagram.

Of course there is always an excuse, and we’re being told that Calamawy was cut to reduce the film’s running time. But for a modern-day Hollywood epic, it isn’t particularly long – so that rings hollow.

Whatever the reason, the decision to remove Ms Calamawy has resulted in a large movement to boycott the film.

It occurs to This Writer that such behaviour is the only way to make film-makers understand that this behaviour is not acceptable at this time.

Even if the aim was really to shorten an overlong film, the optics are terrible – it seems to be a racist decision, attacking a representative of genocide victims, and that is bad enough.

But the bottom line is profit, meaning film-makers will not change their behaviour unless their takings are affected.

This Writer won’t be going to the pictures for this. But then, I can’t afford it anyway. Have you seen the prices at cinemas these days?
