Don’t be fooled by reports of more channel crossings since Labour took office – the media and the Tories are not comparing like with like.
There is likely to be right-wing hysteria over the fact that 20,110 people have crossed the Channel between July 5 and today (December 2, 2024), compared with 17,020 who made the crossing between the same dates last year
But this is due to a spike in crossings during October, when the seas were calmer for more days during the month than last year.
This means comparisons between Labour’s “smash the gangs” approach and the Tory “deport the migrants” plan are meaningless.

Labour simply hasn’t had enough time to make a serious dent in the number of people arriving in the UK by unorthodox means.
The new government has just finalised a deal with Iraq for better border security there, intelligence-sharing and more joint enforcement operations. This is one of several that have been signed since Labour came into office.
But a deal is just words on paper. It is not a guarantee that the number of people taking flimsy boats to the UK after handing money to criminal gangs will reduce.
The Tories took 14 years to get channel crossings up to the highs they reached
It may take Labour many years to reduce them again.
