Here’s Amnesty’s evidence of genocide in Gaza – and can Israel really deny it?

After yesterday’s (Thursday, December 6, 2024) controversial accusation here’s Amnesty’s evidence of genocide in Gaza – and can Israel really deny it?

As reported by the BBC, Amnesty International has accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza war, which Israel strongly denies.

Israel’s claim is the usual – that the accusation is anti-Semitic. Is it?

In order to be anti-Semitic, Amnesty would have to be spreading hatred against all Jewish people. Let’s see how that stacks up.

Here’s the initial X post by Amnesty:

The references are clear, and they all point to the “government of Israel”. That is not directed at all Jews, therefore it is not anti-Semitic. Let’s go to the press release in the link:

Amnesty International’s research has found sufficient basis to conclude that the government of Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip.

In the landmark report, ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman’: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza, Amnesty International documents how, during its military offensive launched in the wake of the deadly Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have carried out acts prohibited under the Genocide Convention, with the specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza.

Again, it is the “government of Israel” and “Israeli forces” that are accused. There is no reference to Judaism, Jews or Jewishness, and the report gives examples of “acts prohibited under the Genocide Convention”.

That seems conclusive to This Writer.

And Amnesty has supported its claims in media interviews as well. Here are a few examples:

Here’s Israel’s counter-accusation:

Holocaust inversion? It seems to This Writer that this has very little to do with the Jewish Holocaust. Instead, having been given land to settle in what used to be British Mandate Palestine, the state of Israel has set about colonising the Palestinian land nearby and killing the people who live there, enacting on those people a similar fate to that which was enacted on their ancestors during World War Two.

Those who do not learn from history really are fated to repeat it, it seems.

And of course it isn’t just Amnesty claiming that the “government of Israel” is committing genocide:

Perhaps the best indicator of whether the “government of Israel” is committing genocide is what is actually happening in Gaza. Here’s a BBC report:

So: children killed; strikes on encampments of displaced civilians; strikes on Israeli-designated “safe zones”. And Israeli government spokespeople are still insisting that they are not involved in a concerted attempt to kill as many people in Gaza as they can?

I don’t think so. I reckon Amnesty’s argument is persuasive. It is a genocide, and it is not anti-Semitic to say so.

The accusation, from respected international organisations, have become more than a trickle now. As you say, the accusations are against the government of the state of Israel. They do not criticise Israelis in general or Jewish people specifically. Whilst Israel is almost 75% Jewish there are still more Jewish people outside the country than within it. We know that conflating blame against the government and against Jewish people in general is anti-semitic. None of the organisations are doing that BUT Israel’s leadership IS doing this. They identify their own leadership with the Jewish religion – this is, in itself, anti-semitic..
