Why should Lords get paid if they don’t show up? asks 38 Degrees.
Read the email for yourself:
Well this is just ridiculous. In one year alone, 140 members of the House of Lords didn’t take part in a single debate – and 50 peers didn’t vote once in that time period. All while claiming huge tax-payer funded allowances. [1]
And it’s not just us frustrated by these shirkers. Tomorrow a group of Lords who do show up to work are pushing to add a new rule to the House of Lords Bill currently going through Parliament. If it passes, it could see up to 100 Lords getting the sack if they don’t start showing up. [2]
It’s a BIG chance to clear out some of the people that simply don’t want to do the work from the Lords. But you know there’ll be opposition from those who want to keep getting paid for doing nothing. And the Government is dragging their heels on this – so we need to show them this change would have massive public backing. [3]
Can you sign the petition to call on the Government to back calls to get rid of shirker Lords? If enough people sign, we’ll send it to the Peers pushing for this change so they can use it in the debate. But we’ll only do that if it feels big enough to make a splash – so add your name now to send a clear message.
Here’s what the petition says:
To: Minister for the Cabinet Office Nick Thomas–Symonds MP and Prime Minister Keir Starmer
Support the cross-bench amendment that would make Peers in the House of Lords have to show up for at least 10% of sitting days or face expulsion. |

Did you know our House of Lords is the second biggest unelected chamber in the world? Only China’s is bigger. [4] The Government’s plans need to go further for real reform. And clearing out these shirkers would be a good start.
And it would be popular with the public as well as 38 Degrees supporters! A poll earlier this year revealed 59% of people want to see the House of Lords abolished. [5] A campaign with huge public support could convince the Government to go further on reform from the very start, instead of making smaller changes here and there.
So will you sign the petition calling for the Government to back a new rule that would see shirker Lords get the sack? As soon as it hits 50,000 we’ll share it with the Lords pushing for reform ahead of their debate tomorrow. Use the button below to sign quickly with one click:
