Why is the BBC refusing to play the Winter Fuel Payment protest song Freezing This Christmas, by Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers? Does Auntie think it will warp our fwagile widdle minds?
If so, This Writer has some bad news for Corporation bosses: it’ll warp our fwagile widdle minds anyway because the BBC no longer dictates what we watch, hear or give our attention.
For example: would you like to see the video for the song again? Here it is:
All this ban has achieved is extra publicity for the song, making it more popular among the general public. This is what always happens and BBC executives should know this – so I wonder whether that was the intention. Even if it wasn’t, it’ll be fun to stir up all the gammons about the possibility of lefties dictating our listening habits with reverse psychology.

Think about it: when Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood was banned in 1984 it went straight to Number One and stayed there. Likewise, God Save The Queen by The Sex Pistols got to Number Two after being banned in 1977. These are just the examples given in the Telegraph‘s article about the current alleged ban.
That article also lists songs with much more controversial themes that still received airplay, and didn’t cause more than a ripple in the public consciousness.
This time around, a song is topping the charts regardless of whether Auntie disapproves, demonstrating how irrelevant the so-called “legacy” broadcasters are in the Social Media Age.
Like it or not, it is Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, and the algorithms they use to dictate what you get to know, who now dictate what the general public are allowed to think.
As for what the song’s creators think of the controversy kicked up by the Corporation: This Site has contacted them for a comment and will publish any reply.
