Are any of these Labour-bashing stories true?

Are any of these Labour-bashing stories true?

It seems to be all the rage in the right-wing press to publish wild stories attacking the government but are any of these Labour-bashing stories true?

The Torygraph published one yesterday, claiming that Keir Starmer has axed doctor apprenticeships for underprivileged students. But look at the language used [in bold]:

Labour has scrapped a doctor apprenticeship scheme that helps underprivileged students train without taking on debt, The Telegraph understands.

The Telegraph understands universities were told last month the scheme is to be “paused in perpetuity” and to cancel plans to recruit new apprentices for next September.

The article doesn’t provide any proof to support the claim, and the comment from the Department of Health and Social Care states that it is working to ensure that everybody has the opportunity to study medicine, regardless of their background.

And the Torygraph is not the only offender in this respect. The Express and its staff seem to take delight in pumping out one story after another, with apparent scant regard for any verification.

It isn’t exactly corruption – so I don’t think reopening the Leveson Inquiry would resolve the situation immediately.

But one of the consequences of re-starting Leveson would be the creation of a genuinely independent press regulator, to examine the quality of stories without bias.

One such regulator already exists – but it isn’t Ipso, to which most national newspapers belong. It is Impress, to which This Writer is aware that social media-based news sites are subscribed.

If media organisations like the Telegraph and the Express wanted to be taken seriously, they would have signed up to Impress, rather than Ipso – or so it seems to This Writer.

As it is, the best I can say is that you should take any story where the writer “understands” something to have happened with a hefty spoonful of salt.
