Richard Murphy reckons tax is an under-used tool

Richard Murphy reckons tax is an under-used tool – and wants to spend 2025 explaining how it can be optimised.

That’s what the man behind Funding the Future wants to be doing for the next 12 months, according to his recent YouTube clip.

What interests This Writer is that his channel has had 7.5 million hits in 2024, suggesting there is a huge appetite for listening to older men talking into cameras. As an older man myself, I find this encouraging.

And his blog, which mostly features transcripts of the YouTube clips, has had 6.9 million reads. Mine managed nearly six million before the readership fell off a cliff in 2021 and I’ve blamed the decline on the social media platforms on which I’ve relied for viral popularity. Professor Murphy is doing better so his methods bear scrutiny.

Here’s his clip:

He also reckons the coming year could be politically brutal. Much of what happens will depend on the actions of Donald Trump as US president. He’s already making some outrageous demands – that could lead to his brand of right-wing politics losing popularity as the effects are felt around the world.

If so, that may sound the death knell for Nigel Farage’s dreams of power in the UK. But would the other parties have the ideas needed to find a way forward? Prof Murphy says no; they want us to think they can only work with the money they receive from taxation and that is never enough. But this is a lie – the government makes the money.

His bottom line is that he reckons the agenda for 2025 is going to be about finding a plan for 2026. Perhaps that is why he is keen to concentrate on making us all more economically literate; if we know what’s going on and how it actually affects us, we might come up with useful ideas to deal with it.

Here’s that clip:
