A group of 20 councillors quit Labour in protest over Starmer, it has been revealed.
The councillors from Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire are setting themselves up as a new independent party, planning to run the council as a minority administration in the short term. The Labour group had formerly numbered 26, so it now has just six councillors.
The defectors claimed that 100 grassroots members have also quit Labour.

Group members have said that the party under Keir Starmer has abandoned traditional Labour values, and criticised policies like the winter fuel allowance cut, over which they claimed 10 of their group had been barred from standing for the party in forthcoming Nottinghamshire County Council elections.
They said plans to reorganise local government into unitary authorities, scrapping district and county councils, would concentrate power in the hands of fewer people, thereby attacking local democracy.
And selective reporting has struck again because, unmentioned in the BBC article – or in other outlets like Sky News, The Times or The Guardian, is the fact that the genocide in Gaza was also a key trigger in the councillors’ decision. You have to go to fellow social media politics site Skwawkbox for that!
And this happened before it became known that Keir Starmer has learned nothing from Freebiegate and is still accepting perks attributed to his position as UK prime minister, while stamping on ordinary people to get them.
