Rudakubana has been sent to prison for at least 52 years - but there remains disagreement over whether his actions were terrorism

Rudakubana has been sent to prison for at least 52 years

Stockport murderer Axel Rudakubana has been sent to prison for at least 52 years.

Mr Justice Goose, sentencing, said he could not impose a life sentence with no minimum term because Rudakubana was 17 years old at the time he committed the three murders, 10 attempted murders and three other crimes to which he has pleaded guilty.

But even with the sentences set to run concurrently rather than consecutively – meaning they will be served at the same time, he said it was unlikely that Rudakubana would ever be released.

This Writer will not publish details of the crimes – because I don’t need to. It is enough that he committed them and admitted as much. If you want to read the harrowing details, they are reported by the BBC here.

But I will say that in my opinion, he deserves to serve every second of the sentence he has been given, if only for his words at a police station after he was arrested: “It’s a good thing those children are dead… I’m so glad… so happy.”

The judge admitted that Rudakubana’s crimes were not terrorist in nature, saying he “must accept” that there was no evidence Rudakubana had any terrorist cause, but adding that his culpability is “equivalent to terrorist matters, whatever its purpose”.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy clarified that documents and images found on Rudakubana’s devices showed he had a “long-standing obsession with violence, killing and genocide.

“We can say that from all those documents is that no one ideology was uncovered and that is why this has not been treated as terrorism.”

This leaves us in limbo regarding the main focus of This Site’s interest in the case: Keir Starmer’s insistence on using it to widen the definition of terrorism to include the psychotic behaviour of lone attackers like Rudakubana.

My instinct is still that this would distract counter-terrorism forces from their main work and it would be better to create new organisations to tackle this threat.
