Is it true that Liz Kendall has shelved her disability benefit cuts plan?
Is it true that Liz Kendall has shelved her disability benefit cuts plan, as the Telegraph has claimed?
Kendall has been planning to cut billions from the benefits bill by changing eligibility criteria for disability benefits unfairly, in order to remove payments from people who are genuinely disabled.
But now the Torygraph is telling us that the DWP’s recent failure in court has prompted a rethink:
The Work and Pensions Secretary… quietly announced this week that she had postponed a crackdown that would have made it harder to claim benefits for mental health conditions.
Ms Kendall was effectively forced to ditch the changes, which were introduced by the Tories, after a judge ruled the previous government had not properly consulted claimants.
Ministers have insisted they plan to launch a new consultation on the changes in the spring and are committed to still achieving those savings in full.
But the delay to enacting the changes, which were meant to take effect from April, will raise fears [Rachel] Reeves will have to raise taxes again or cut spending on front-line services.
Did you enjoy the subtle “divide-and-conquer” at the end – that disabled people keeping their benefits could lead to higher taxes for all of us, or inferior public services due to fewer funds.
But is it true? Has the change been scrapped – or just delayed? Or what?
