Childcare costs have rocketed – to ensure we can’t afford to have children?
It seems having a family is an occupation that will be reserved for the rich in the bright Tory future.
Is that a future you want?
The cost of childcare for young children in England has risen up to seven times faster than wages since 2008, analysis shows.
TUC research published on Friday shows that childcare costs for parents with a one-year-old have soared by almost half (48%) over a period when their wages have fallen after adjusting for inflation, albeit rising by 12% in cash terms.
The difference in the rate of increase was greatest in London, where childcare costs rose 7.4 times faster than pay between 2008 and 2016, and the East Midlands, where they rose seven times quicker.
Unlike parents with older children who have not started school, most of the 950,000 working parents with one-year-olds do not get any state help, meaning the costs are eating into their family budgets, the union says.

I wouldn't have to campaign on Twitter if Britain's benefit claimants were cute and furry cats and dogs—or lions named Cecil.

Fair comment, I thought. Let’s try attaching images of cute animals to stories of the Tories’ “calculated cruelty” over benefits and see if attitudes change.

No, that is not it, they want to have the older children looking after the younger again, so they do not need to have the responsibility in helping with child care costs, then they don’t have to provide an education to poorer children. A little while after that., they will say, these children are doing nothing for their keep and it won’t be long before they are enrolled on universal credit themselves. If it is allowed to carry on as it has been, this is where it will end up.
Whilst not disagreeing Mike I would add another reason for childcare costs soaring is the closure /cessation of local funding that has allowed childcare to be run only by private businesses. These have replaced the local community affordable childcare schemes
