British politics has come to a pretty pass: Suella Braverman is now on the left of Labour on benefits!
Here’s our Cornish friend Damo with the sad, staggering story:
Sadly, like Damo, I can’t say I’m unsympathetic with the view Braverman has put forward. I don’t believe it’s her honest opinion – obviously, because she’s a Tory and the Tories introduced the two-child benefit cap.

But her point of view is better than that of Labour – Labour! – shadow health secretary Wes Streeting. He never tires of telling us he’s from a one-parent family and has had to rely on benefits at various times in his life. But clearly he’s all right now (Jack) and feels no obligation to leave the safety net out for people who are struggling now.
In his presentation, Damo describes Streeting as “a glazed ham of a man, about as likeable as a dose of the clap”.
It’s a brilliant description that This Writer intends to steal – with one caveat:
It is far too charitable.
