Keir Starmer’s new Labour government’s policies are creating strange effects, and here’s one – do we actually agree with Laura Kuenssberg on social care?
Starmer has gone on the record to say that the National Health Service needs urgent action to fix it, but has been much more reticent about social care; he says he’ll look at the issue and think about what to do about it in the fullness of time.
Kuenssberg, on the other hand, says social care needs to be fixed before the NHS can be, because of bed blocking; people who need to be in care homes are instead stuck in hospital beds because there is nowhere for them to go.

Here’s Kuenssberg – and a discussion of her words – from the Maximilien Robespierre YouTube channel:
The problem, it seems to This Writer, is that successive governments are looking for a way to put these people into care that is cheaper than keeping them in hospital, and no such system has emerged so far.
The solution may be to spend extra money putting people into care; if it’s more expensive, then the money should be spent.
The reason? It is possible that freeing up the hospital beds so more people with illnesses and injuries can have treatment will make our society healthier and more productive economically, meaning the tax take will improve, meaning the government will be able to spend more public money on things like social care… and the extra cost will be negated.
This may be especially true if plans to prevent people suffering (preventable) illnesses and injuries are accelerated.
The question is whether Starmer’s government wants to be judged as thinking in the short- or long-term. At the moment, he seems very short-sighted indeed.
