The article refers to a current row in which Labour Transport Secretary Louise Haigh called P&O Ferries’ owner DP World a “cowboy operator”, referring to its decision to fire and re-hire 800 employees, and threatened a boycott of the company. In response, DP World pulled out of a promised £1 billion investment in its London Gateway container port.

The offending comments were made while Ms Haigh – and deputy prime minister Angela Rayner – were publicising new legislation on workers’ rights. And they were part of a press release approved by Downing Street, apparently.
After some tense negotiation, the company is still set to attend the UK’s investment summit today (Monday, October 14, 2024), and the port expansion is still likely to go ahead.
But unions that supported and informed the new Employment Rights Bill have criticised prime minister Keir Starmer for failing to support his ministers’ comments. Instead, Starmer had briefed against Ms Haigh and attacked her words.
Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, made his feelings clear:
“Louise Haigh has the full support and solidarity of the Fire Brigades Union in setting out clear opposition to P&O and other rogue employers sacking workers and imposing diabolical sweat shop conditions on employees.
“Any backlash or briefing against Labour politicians and trade unionists who challenge or clamp down on firms that have been exploiting and abusing workers in that way is completely unacceptable, wherever it comes from.
“It’s outrageous that DP World is seeking to derail the extension of employment rights that Labour was voted into government to deliver.
“Rogue employers and corporate bullies cannot be allowed to hold a democratically elected government to ransom.”
Well, it seems the legislation will go ahead and the company has bowed to the inevitable – and it is to be hoped that Starmer has also accepted that he does not need to cave in to “rogue” employers.
Are we actually witnessing the death of such practices? With Starmer in charge, believe it only when you see it.
