Big Brother has declared war on Palestine

Big Brother has declared war on Palestine – by which I don’t mean the overseer of George Orwell’s dystopian 1984 but the reality TV show.

TV executives removed an episode of the series currently airing on ITV, in order to digitally remove a pro-Palestinian t-shirt design that one of the housemates was wearing – after receiving a complaint from fake ‘charity’ the Campaign Against Antisemitism.

Apparently the complaint stated that the shirt worn by psychologist Ali Bromley – showing the watermelon symbol that has become a symbol of “the simple yet profound ways we keep Palestinian heritage alive” – was in some way an expression of hatred towards Jews.

It seems the complaint asked, “How did the show’s staff allow this shirt to be worn, let alone broadcast it on national television?”

Take a look at the picture on the left of this article’s featured image. Can you see any way it threatens Jewish people with hatred? I can’t.

Yet ITV took the episode off its on-demand service (which I believe is currently calling itself ITVX) in order to digitally scrub the t-shirt’s design away.

It also released a statement of apology to the fake charity and anyone else whose fragile minds were offended by the “playful” design:

“We regret that the implications of this particular item of clothing were not fully understood in our bag checks or prior to broadcast of (Tuesday)’s show. We apologise to any viewers who have been offended by the broadcast and assure viewers that Big Brother was unaware of the implications of the image.

“The item of clothing has been removed from the house. The housemate has been spoken to and they have expressed that they are unaware of the implications and did not wish to cause any harm or offence. Any offensive messaging associated with the image does not reflect the values or beliefs of Big Brother.”

Apparently, though, far right-wing political views expressed by other housemates have gone uncensored. It seems we are living in Orwell’s world after all.

Thankfully for This Writer’s faith in human nature, this act of violence against the pro-Palestine movement has provoked a storm of protest, with more than 10,000 complaints, including the following from X account Super TV:
