The UK prime minister seems more determined than ever to pretend that Israel is a victim while its missiles rampage across the Middle East: is Keir Starmer really saying Iran has no right to defend itself?
Take a look at this:
Why repeat the tired line that “Israel has a right to defend itself”, when to do so is to re-write history?
Israeli forces murdered a man on sovereign Iranian soil; Iran therefore had every right to strike back – so wasn’t it Israel that should not have launched missiles at Iran on Saturday morning (October 26)?

Then again, if Iran responds, there is a danger of the situation escalating to an actual war – and the only people who want that – it seems to This Writer – are in Israel.
So by saying, “We need to avoid further regional escalation and urge all sides to show restraint,” Starmer could be merely echoing the sentiment of Iran’s own spokespeople.
(For clarity, they said that Iran “recognises its responsibilities towards regional peace and security”.)
But it is clumsy language. By repeating Israel’s “get-out” clause, Starmer has made his behaviour un-statesmanlike.
Not only is he a fledgeling prime minister but he is proving to be extremely naive.
