Does this expulsion call mean Reform UK’s MPs can’t BE reformed?

This Writer does not support this party but even I think this is silly: does this expulsion call mean Reform UK’s MPs can’t be reformed?

It seems James McMurdock (South Basildon & East Thurrock) assaulted a former girlfriend – in 2006, when he was 19. He turned himself in immediately and, in his own words, “faced the consequences then and paid for my action in full… It was the realisation of what happened that night and the shame I felt over it that led me to turn my life around.”

Apparently this isn’t good enough for Gavin Callaghan, Labour leader of Basildon Council, who reckons Reform UK leader Nigel Farage should have withdrawn his party’s whip after it was reported that Mr McMurdock not only pushed the woman but also kicked her about four times.

This was clearly known to the police when they dealt with the case – which will be long-spent by now, meaning it isn’t even on Mr McMurdock’s record.

There is absolutely no reason to mention it now; in fact, the UK justice system expects us to understand that, in the absence of any subsequent convictions, Mr McMurdock really is a reformed man.

Perhaps Mr Callaghan has caught the same malaise as those who accused Louise Haigh, forcing her resignation yesterday (Friday, November 29, 2024) over an offence for which she was given a conditional discharge by magistrates – meaning the conviction would have been spent a maximum of three years after it was conferred on her. In other words, after 2017, her condition should have been wiped from her record and she should have been considered to have been rehabilitated.

Instead, when details were revealed in the press, she inexplicably resigned as Transport Secretary – but continues to sit as a Labour MP; she hasn’t had the Labour whip withdrawn

So, again, one has to question Mr Callaghan’s demand for Mr McMurdock to lose the Reform UK whip. It is entirely disproportionate and in fact strikes me as being hysterical.
