Look to your children for the reasons behind rising mental illness
If you want to know why it’s happening, look to your children for the reasons behind rising mental illness and anxiety.
That’s the message from economist Richard Murphy in a video clip released today – and if you listen to him, he makes a lot of sense:
There is, of course, and easy way to test this thesis – although it is rather sad.
All we have to do is watch as successive attempts to force us all to feel better – without changing the system we’re living in – fail.
Part of that means we’ll have to watch people die. People dear to us, perhaps.
If that happens, watch also the reactions of those responsible. They won’t care a jot. Chances are, they’ll just bang on about the economy and why it was necessary for them to make hard decisions.
But isn’t it strange how those decisions are never hard on them? And doesn’t that prove Mr Murphy’s claim about the neoliberal lie?

In answer to the ‘back in my day’ lot I say this. Things have always been garbage and always will be. Mental Health problems (particularly in men) were dealt with via long trips to the pub to abuse alcohol. It wasn’t called that of course, it was called a night out with the boys and alcoholics were said to ‘like a drink’ Nowadays we recognise mental health problems when we see them and use drugs instead of booze. The ‘young people of today’ are not ‘delicate little flowers’ they are the people who were on the front line in COVID and were promptly shafted by the government. With increased access to overseas news and the virality of mobile phone footage they are painfully aware of how the world REALLY works unlike old fogies like me when I was their age. I was blissfully unaware yet they have a weight to carry and are being given the shit end of the stick too. Everything changes but everything remains the same..
