Isn’t the Assisted Dying Bill weakened by removing judges from decisions?
Kim Leadbeater, the Labour MP proposing the Bill, wants to change current plan for a High Court judge to check that each person applying to die is eligible and has not been coerced into making the decision.
She wants to replace the judge with a panel of “experts” because concerns have been raised about the High Court’s ability to oversee every case – and because she thinks “extra expertise” will improve her planned new law.

Tory MP Danny Kruger disagrees, questioning whether these “experts” would be impartial, as a judge must.
This chimes with what the writer of the Normal Island blog stated in an article I quoted yesterday:
High Court judges are to be removed from the euthanasia approval process to avoid the risk of them saying no.
The article also states that
the government is tirelessly watering down safeguards for assisted dying and is keen to let people with mental health conditions be pressured, I mean helped into topping themselves.
This is a seductive argument at a time when the government is attacking disabled benefit claimants for no reason (there is no fraud in disability benefit claims, therefore there is no need for a crackdown on fraud there).
Has Kim Leadbeater herself been pressured – or willingly co-opted – into joining the government’s apparent pogrom against disabled people?
You decide. Your opinion will probably be as valid as that of her “experts”, if they ever get a chance to decide whether a disabled person can live or die.
