The government has put the regulator of privatised energy firms under review – so is this our chance to make Ofgem work for us?
It may sound too good to be true, but campaigning organisation 38 Degrees reckons there’s a chance.
In an email, the organisation writes:
The Government is reviewing energy regulator Ofgem – who spectacularly failed us during the energy crisis. It let energy companies take home millions in profits and bonuses whilst so many struggled – even letting them break into vulnerable peoples’ homes to force fit prepayment meters that could result in the lights literally going out.

Now ministers are finally doing something about it. But you can bet suppliers are counting on us forgetting about Ofgem’s terrible track record, so any changes just tinker at the edges whilst bills rise again, inequality gets worse and we all pay for it.
After the last few years, we cannot let that happen.
We need a massive show of public anger for all the ways Ofgem has failed us – and we need it now. Will you sign the petition and let Ofgem know they’re not off the hook, and we demand REAL change? It only takes 30 seconds to sign.
We’ve taken on Ofgem before – and won. Thousands of us came together demanding it tackle the cruel practice of energy suppliers breaking into homes to fit precarious prepayment meters – leading to new protection for millions!
This is a huge chance to create change again – but we can’t do it without you. We need to push for real solutions to make Ofgem work for us:
- Make Ofgem a true consumer champion, holding suppliers to account for bad practice, ending the ‘revolving door’ of energy bosses making the decisions, and not making us foot the bill for firms going bust. [4]
- Reduce our bills to fair and affordable levels that meet people’s needs, removing protections that guarantee profits and bonuses for energy companies.
- Make sure everyone automatically gets the best energy deal and customer service they need – and actually protect vulnerable people from profit-hungry suppliers.
So, will you sign the petition demanding Ofgem is forced into REAL change – not just let it fail us again and again? Signing could help all of us get fairer prices, better customer support, and stop funding millionaire CEO bonuses.
It seems worth a punt, so This Writer has signed.
