Dodds has quit the government over aid cuts

International Development Minister and Minister for Women and Equalities Annaliese Dodds has quit both her roles in the Labour government in protest at cuts to the international aid budget.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced earlier this week that funding would be reduced from 0.5 per cent of gross national income to 0.3 per cent in 2027 in order to fund an increase in defence spending.

In her resignation letter, Dodds said the cuts would “remove food and healthcare from desperate people – deeply harming the UK’s reputation”.

She added that the cut would “also likely lead to a UK pull-out from numerous African, Caribbean and Western Balkan nations – at a time when Russia has been aggressively increasing its global presence”.

She also said that she had expected the Cabinet to collectively discuss Labour’s fiscal rules and approach to taxation, warning that this would not be enough to ensure the government could fulfil its responsibilities, either domestically or internationally.

But she said she continues to support the government.
