Brown was a better chancellor than Osborne is – LabourList

Last Updated: November 27, 2014By

The Times Red Box, in collaboration with YouGov, have done a poll to find out what the public thinks about the former chancellor [Gordon Brown] – particularly in relation to the current one, George Osborne, according to LabourList.

When respondents were asked whether they thought Gordon Brown was a better or worse chancellor of the Exchequer than George Osborne is now – 33% said better, 29% answered worse, 23% said the same and 15% said they didn’t know.

Interestingly, nine per cent of people who plan to vote Conservative in 2015 said they thought Brown was a better chancellor than Osborne.

However, when respondents were asked about Gordon Brown’s role as Prime Minister he doesn’t do as well. They were asked whether they thought he a better or worse prime minister than David Cameron is now – and 22% said better while 41% said worse.

The results were skewed because mostly loyal Tory and Labour supporters were asked.

But it still shows that, when it comes to the economy, the Tories aren’t always seen as the most trusted.

Well yes, he was, but it’s a bit like saying, “Richard Nixon was more sane than Idi Amin”.

Generally, Brown kept things fairly stable for a long while, which he does deserve credit for, but he was the man who oversaw the introduction of PFI, and who also enhanced the zero-oversight lending culture started by the Tories in the mid-80’s. Indeed, it could be argued the illusion of stability for much of the 2000’s was a side-effect of Brown making it very easy for banks to cover up or ‘spin’ bad news.

PFI was introduced by the Tories, and Labour was persuaded into using it by civil servants at the Treasury (I did a bit of research on this a couple of weeks ago).
As for regulation, well, we all know he was wrong about that. He’d say he was misled by bankers who promised flat that they could be trusted. Some say he should have known better (including myself) but the bottom line there is that the bankers caused the problems. Murder is against the law but when someone commits murder, you don’t imprison the MPs who created the law, do you (I know this is a moot point as they’re all dead anyway, but the point is about responsibility)?

Any chancellor has to fare better than Gidiot. Just making ever deeper cuts and lying about his predecessors can be done by any fool and Gidiot seems to make the best fool yet.
