Theresa May’s rebuke for David Davis confirms that the Tories have no plan for Brexit

Now they’re squabbling over their own lack of direction.

Theresa May’s criticism of David Davis means nothing when she has provided no firm steer on the UK’s departure from the European Union.

All it has done is prove to everybody that neither she, he, nor Liam Fox and Boris Johnson (the other ministers involved) have any idea how to salvage anything from the mess that Johnson co-created, along with Michael Gove, Nigel Farage, sundry others and David Cameron – who only called a referendum on the EU in order to try to keep his party united.

A forlorn hope, it seems.

Theresa May has slapped down one of her most senior Cabinet Ministers after he said it is “very improbable” that the UK will remain a member of the single market if the country is to regain control of its borders.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said it is not right to be “putting all your cards on the table” and claimed David Davis was setting out “his opinion”, not government policy, when he spoke in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Davis told the House of Commons that it is “a simple truth” that if the UK was forced to accept free movement of people it would be unlikely that the country could remain in the single market.

    The Brexiteers big economic argument was always: they need us more than we need them, so we’ll get access without free movement. Whoops. We are heading for one big disaffected nation. 17 million leave voters who aren’t going to get what they thought they were voting for, and 16 million remain voters who have been rendered powerless to intervene.

    There isn’t one. They will have to radically rethink all of Tory policy since continuing austerity will effectively turn the UK into a third world country, with an uber-wealthy elite and extensive, impoverished general population. It is very difficult to re-engineer your society and the Tories certainly don’t want that challenge.

    No hard border between Eire and Northern Ireland? How can that be if UK is out of the EU? There has to be a Customs Border and an Immigration Border just as there is between Romania ( in EU) and Bulgaria(not in EU). Maggie May living in a parallel universe?

      @Roy Beiley
      “No hard border between Eire and Northern Ireland?” There has never been a “hard border” even during The Troubles.

    We voted to leave the institution that is the European Union, that is all. There was nothing on the ballot paper about the terms.

    I lay the blame solely at the feet of Call-Me-Dave. HE should have had a plan in place BEFORE he offered the referendum!
