The advert Doritos don’t want you to see

Sex sells: But Doritos might not be as attractive when you find out what parent company PepsiCo has been doing.

Sex sells: But Doritos might not be as attractive when you find out what parent company PepsiCo has been doing.

Lots of people love Doritos, don’t they? I do – or at least, I did. Maybe you do too.

Would you love them if you knew how they were made?

Some Doritos flavours contain palm oil. Doritos’ parent company, PepsiCo, buys 427,500 tonnes of palm oil every year. Palm oil production destroys rainforest and threatens species to the point of extinction.

This deforestation results in the death of over 1,000 Sumatran orangutans every year. This is the ad that Doritos don’t want you to see:

And of course the destruction of the rainforests is harmful to our entire planetary ecosystem.

Knowing this, I’d quite like to do to the President of PepsiCo, Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi, what James Bond does at the end of Quantum of Solace – take him into the middle of the desert (that, in this case, Mr Nooyi has created), and leave him there with nothing but a small bottle of palm oil to drink.

Something serious has to be done about PepsiCo and all the other corporates who think they can rape the planet and there won’t be any consequences.

While we wait for that to happen, we can make a start by telling Doritos and PepsiCo to adopt a responsible palm oil policy, and save our rainforests.

Palm oil is heavy on saturated fats so basically consuming it is no better than eating animal fats. Palm oil is now used in junk foods because hydrogenated oils (full of trans fats) now have a bad reputation. We really need a campaign against junk food in general but of course we come up against the interests of Mega Big Business. Of all junk foods I only eat crisps because in the UK crisps are generally FRIED in vegetable oils (usually sunflower) which are low in saturates while liquid vegetable oils, other than olive oil, are mostly produced by UK farmers – we’ve all seen the vivid yellow of fields growing oilseed rape. Avoid BAKED products which include Doritos, all of which generally contain palm oils.

Historically, my family has used palm oil, because palm trees grow where my family is from so, our native (for want of a better word) foods are cooked using it. Why these greedy corporate bosses feel the need to use things that are alien to their diets is beyond me. Western “civilization” will be the end of us all; it seeks to take more from the larder than the larder can provide and all in the name of profit. When did we stop feeding ourselves? When did we stop living within our means? How is it that, in days of yore, the poor were emaciated yet, today, the poor are obese? Something has gone horribly wrong. We are bred to be consumers, programmed. Our children slaves to gadgetry. I work in what was an incredibly social business. These days, I speak to hardly anybody, or more correctly, hardly anybody speaks to me, because all communication is done via WhatsApp, which I don’t have, nor do I want it. This is the future to which we are being hurtled, wherein people are themselves commodities, to be bought and sold, expendable, like the rest of nature. If it serves not “our” purpose, get rid. How little things have changed, yet how much.

This is a good one Mike. The plight of all animals verging on extinction is a man-made disaster which will ultimately impact all life on earth but too many people just don’t get it(because we are all animal luvers and tree huggers nonsense), so many thanks for this. Shared and signed.
