Will the Lords kill PIP eligibility cuts?

Last Updated: February 27, 2017By

A bombshell just got dropped, on the BBC’s Daily Politics: Because the Tory Government wants to change the regulations on eligibility for Personal Independence Payment*, the House of Lords could kill the plan by passing what’s known as a “fatal motion”.

The aim is to present the change as a “negative” statutory instrument (SI). A statutory instrument under the negative procedure will automatically become law without debate unless there is an objection from either House.

Such an objection would happen if a peer tabled a “prayer” motion against the negative SI. Under the standard negative procedure, the SI is annulled if the prayer motion is agreed by the House of Lords within 40 days of the SI being laid.

That will put the cat among the pigeons, won’t it?

If the Lords support a fatal motion, then it is likely the Tory Government will have to reassess its spending commitments – and with Philip Hammond set to announce his budget in only nine days’ time.

What will he do? I don’t know. But you can expect skulduggery, because he’s a Tory.

Well the Lordships have surprised everyone before now and actually made some common sense decision for once that their lame brain clueless Lower House chums have not thought through properly. We’ll see what will happen this time they would certainly get a lot of good vibes if they do the right thing.

I sincerely hope the Lords CAN prevent this injustice! We cannot build the foundations of our economy on the CORPSES of our poor, sick and vulnerable. THAT is NOT the British way!

Wasnt that long ago t.may was stating mental health needs to be recognised as any other disability and more help given. Well well that didnt last long did it? This gov just dont relate to any families (just managing) they have no idea how pip payment is to disabled people. One of the richest countries in the world and in2017 we treat people this way. Dont know how this gov sleeps at night.
