If Corbyn’s equality pledges are genuine, the only thing in their way is propaganda

Kudos to Zoe Williams in The Guardian for supporting Jeremy Corbyn’s agenda for women’s equality in the Labour Party.

The policies show clear understanding of the economic consequences of neoliberal and Conservative policies for women. We’ve all known for years that women have borne the brunt of the Tories’ austerity cuts but Mr Corbyn is the first politician to propose any action to curb that.

But there remains the huge barrier of public perception to overcome.

Opponents of Mr Corbyn have been making – and repeating – false claims about the Labour leader for months; misogyny is among the main accusations levelled against him.

It is as ridiculous to claim that Mr Corbyn hates women as it is to claim that he hates Jews (anti-Semitism being another high-profile accusation) but his opponents subscribe to the doctrine of Goebbels: Repeat a lie often enough and people will believe it.

Do you believe the lie? Or do you support the initiative for something better?

When Jeremy Corbyn unveiled Equality for Women on Wednesday, he referred to the 10 general pledges he has made for a fairer future, and how they related to women, followed by 10 further policies that were specific to women.

If we accept – the data insists that we do – that any contraction of the state throws the burden of care back on to women, disproportionately if not exclusively, then most of Corbyn’s economic policies could be sold as policies for women, leaving aside for the time being whether or not women would, as a consequence, vote for them.

I predict there will be plenty of nasty propaganda from the nasty Tories and their friends in equally nasty right wing media.
