Researchers consider legal action to stop BBC bias against Jeremy Corbyn

Last Updated: September 23, 2016By
Leader: Jeremy Corbyn.

Jeremy Corbyn.

Oh, and you thought you were getting impartial coverage?

Let’s see how this one pans out, shall we?

A media ethics watchdog group says the BBC’s “clear and consistent bias” against the Labour leader in its news coverage is so bad it is considering taking legal action against the broadcaster.

Press campaign group the Media Reform Coalition (MRC) published a study in July, which found BBC news bulletins gave twice as much airtime to Corbyn’s critics than his supporters during the Labour leadership coup in June.

It presented the findings to the BBC, but has been disappointed with its lack of engagement since.

The group — which is made up of academics, media campaigners, and civil society groups — is now considering whether to take the corporation to court to uphold its legal duty to impartiality.

The  BBC’s royal charter and operating agreement set out its “regulatory obligation” to impartiality. It says: “The BBC must do all it can to ensure that controversial subjects are treated with due accuracy and impartiality in all relevant output.”

The similarities between the bias meted out to the ‘Yes’ side in IndyRef1 & the Corbynistas today is striking. But I didn’t hear you, Mike, or anyone in the Labour establishment complain – indeed it was the full throated support that Labour gave to the No campaign, backed by the State broadcaster & Tory money, that destroyed Labour in Scotland.
If our experience in Scotland is anything to go by complaints will, at best, elicit a pat on the head & words of sympathy, with no change. It will be interesting if a re-elected Corbyn will address the democratic deficit within public broadcasting.

Labour in Scotland was destroyed by its own complacency and a highly prejudicial propaganda campaign by Scottish nationalists.
      You’re still at it now.
The ‘No’ campaign was well within its rights to want Scotland to remain in the United Kingdom but the propaganda machine, determined to find any way to defeat this, fabricated a lie that Labour and the Conservatives were bosom buddies, just because they were co-operating on one policy.
And it’s still happening today. Where’s your evidence that Labour has ever been supported by Tory money?
This is the kind of nonsense that makes it extremely difficult to sympathise with the position you put forward with regard to the independence referendum, even though I can see there is an argument to be made.
If you were to strip away the lies about Labour, we might be able to find some common ground. Until then, I’m afraid I can’t support you on this.

You are in denial Mike. Labour & Tories worked hand in hand, using ‘Scottish’ Labour activists (rapidly dwindling resulting in English activists being bussed into the country) & Tory money to fund ‘Better Together’ plus their front organisations. This is why the Labour Yes voting bloc moved in its entirety to the SNP.
Sticking your head in the sand won’t make the facts go away.
But I can’t disguise my schadenfreude towards a party that welcomed the MSM with open arms – including the State broadcaster – in 2013 & is now being crucified by the same Establishment interests.. What’s sauce for the goose …

Methinks that the Project fear branch of that particular Campaign may have had more that a little to do with that, rather than the mere association and albeit temporary partnership with the Tories.
