The band behind John Lewis’s ‘Buster the Boxer’ advert has something to say about ‘Stop Funding Hate’ #Vaults

Last Updated: December 27, 2016By

‘Buster the Boxer’ does his thing in the eponymous Christmas advert.

The band the provided the music for the John Lewis Christmas advert, ‘Buster the Boxer’, has made a statement about the company’s decision to continue advertising in right-wing newspapers in spite of requests to desist connected with the ‘Stop Funding Hate’ campaign.

‘Stop Funding Hate’ calls on big companies to drop adverts from newspapers accused of promoting “hatred, discrimination and demonisation” – but John Lewis has stated that it never makes “an editorial judgement on a particular newspaper”.

Vaults – the band who provided the music for ‘Buster’ – has been approached by supporters of ‘Stop Funding Hate’, presumably to justify participation in an advert by a firm that has said it will continue to fund the newspapers the campaign has targeted. Here is the band’s response (for those who are unfamiliar with the band, Blythe is Blythe Pepino, the lead vocalist):

Here’s the advert (as if you haven’t seen it by now):

I think supporting the band’s stance might do more to persuade John Lewis than the campaign alone. But what do you think?

So are they as opposed to extremist left wing supporting newspapers as well? Or do they consider anyone who disagrees with them is backing hate? the hated hope not hate group springs to mind as being similar in its one sided approach.

No, you’re completely wrong. ‘Stop Funding Hate’ campaigns to stop major companies advertising in papers that promote “hatred, discrimination or demonization”. I know you support those things if they are about the EU or foreign people coming to the UK. The campaign would target left-wing newspapers as well – if it could find any, and if they could then be shown to be promoting “hatred, discrimination or demonization”, which, again, is a tall order. So – no, not a one-sided approach. And – no, Hope Note Hate is NOT hated by anybody except bigots, and does not need to be dragged into this issue.
