Can Labour play by the rules and still beat the Tories’ backroom ‘sweetheart’ deals?

Last Updated: February 10, 2017By

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Is this writer making a good point – or just hitting and hoping?

Tories are never going to play by the rules when it comes to the devolution of austerity. No matter what platitudes they offer about “all councils bearing the same brunt”, they will always look after their own.

If Labour councils co-ordinated across the country, they could mobilise a nationwide campaign of both political pressure and public support that would force the Tories to not only cease and desist with these sweetheart deals but also the failed economic policy of austerity that has decimated working class communities for over a decade.

When the public sees Labour councils fighting for them they will fight for Labour councils in return.

By supporting legal no-cuts budgets, it proves that Labour are a serious opposition that will fight tooth and nail for the communities they represent. Jeremy Corbyn often says that “austerity is a political choice” and it’s about time Labour councils stood up to the Government and opposed their methods of selective austerity.

Talking of playing by the rules, what has happened to the Police investigation into the systematic Tory election expenses fraud?

My interactions with local councillors have lead me to believe they are less interested in their electorate and more in picking up the expenses than even the mp’s. I know that is tarring them all with the same brush and the will be some good ones out there somewhere but generally speaking they will not rock any form of water born transport.

Labour Councils could start reversing Neo-Liberal rhetoric and start talking about how they could create jobs, build houses (direct Labour force) cheaper to rent, they could offer legal services in competition with the private sector.

The truth is that we have Local politicians that do not understand how the economy really works and believe the Neo-Liberal mythology that we have to raise taxes in order to spend in the economy.

Once they understand that our government is the creator of all the money in circulation, that our country can never go broke, they will be able to effectively challenge the lie, that our public services are unaffordable.
