If Donald Trump was planning a secret trip to the UK, connected to the G20 summit in Hamburg, why should we believe him when he says it won’t happen?

Here’s The Guardian‘s take on the story:

Donald Trump will not be making a surprise visit to his Scottish golf course in the next two weeks, the White House has said, as the threat of short-notice protests mounted in Britain.

A spokeswoman for the US president said on Monday that no trip was imminent, amid mounting speculation that Trump was planning to make an unofficial visit to the UK on his way to or from the G20 summit in Hamburg this week.

“While we look forward to visiting the UK, it will not happen in the next two weeks,” the spokeswoman said.

That’s all very well, but what’s to stop him saying this and coming anyway, having deflected possible protests?

Strength of feeling against the US president remains strong – as these tweets from two of our favourite commentators show:

But this is Donald Trump. He isn’t exactly known for bowing to the will of the people.

Owen Jones has a point, this is a thin-skinned child in a man’s body, he would not like to be humiliated with pictures of protests being shown to people in his own country!! Personally I think he has demeaned the position of President

Britain would be better of if it kicked the US into touch and stopped following it like a lap dog

Special Relationship is and always has been one-sided in favour of US. We should claim our Sovereignty back!
