This result shows how wrong Yr Obdt Srvt can be.

I predicted a close vote earlier today (July 18) and the result was anything but close.

MPs voted by a majority of 41 to stop the suspension of Parliament between October 9 and December 18.

The catch is that it would be possible if a new executive is formed in Northern Ireland’s devolved assembly.

The government had opposed the amendment but four cabinet ministers abstained – Greg Clark, David Gauke, Philip Hammond and Rory Stewart.

And 17 Conservatives voted to support it, including now-former minister for digital and the creative industries Margot James, who resigned in order to do so.

Apparently a spokesperson for departing prime minister Theresa May said she had been disappointed that some ministers had failed to vote – and that she was sure her successor would take this into account when forming a Parliament.

(Like that’s going to happen! Only yesterday (July 17) she’s supposed to have made a jab at Boris Johnson in her farewell speech. If he wins, he might take some or all of them on, just to spite her.)

Let’s be honest, though – this result shows that government has ceased to function in the UK.

Democracy seems to be enjoying itself, though.
