Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister after just 45 days in the job

Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom after just 45 days in the role.

She is the shortest-serving prime minister in the history of the UK.

She says a new leader will be announced within a week. If that’s true, why did the Tory Party waste the entire summer on a leadership election after Boris Johnson resigned?

Here’s her statement:

Jeremy Hunt has already ruled himself out of the running, after he failed to get the support of even the 20 MPs needed to get into the first stage of the last leadership race.
