Lords refuse to give in to government on Rwanda Bill

Last Updated: April 17, 2024By Tags: , , , , , , , ,

The Tories just found out that they’re not going to have an easy time deporting refugees, after the Lords refused to give in to the government on its Rwanda Bill.

MPs in the House of Commons have overturned previous changes to the Bill, whose sole purpose is to make it legally acceptable for the Tory government to send people who have arrived in the UK without official permission – as refugees, for example – to Rwanda, in spite of concerns about that country’s suitability.

So peers in the House of Lords put them right back in – possibly with a few changes. Here‘s the BBC:

Peers renewed their demand for the Bill to have “due regard” for international and key domestic laws, including human rights and modern slavery legislation, by backing a Labour amendment.

The Lords agreed to crossbench peer Lord Hope’s measure, requiring Rwanda to pass an independent verification before it is considered safe.

Labour’s proposal of exemption for those who worked with the UK military or government overseas, such as Afghan interpreters, from removal secured renewed support.

Authorities in Rwanda seem to have given up on ever seeing any deportees from the UK – having sold off housing that we’re told had been earmarked for them [see featured image].

The Bill was expected to be passed yesterday (April 17), but will now go back to the Commons on Monday, when MPs will undoubtedly change it – again – to what they want.
