Faiza Shaheen has joined the growing ranks of Independent election candidates. Yay!

This Writer suggested it after Labour gave her the boot for ridiculous non-reasons: “It’s not too late for her to join the rising tide of Independent candidates. Her high profile might help them wash away the Establishment parties and their stink.”

I’m delighted that she has decided to stand as an Independent because the constituency of Chingford and Woodford Green has languished in the grip of Iain Duncan Smith for far too long.

Here’s her announcement:

I am standing as an independent candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green at the General Election on 4 July.

In a statement, Ms Shaheen said: “I have reached this decision following hundreds of messages from people in my community, who say there are no options left for them.

“They are tired of the Tories but now feel they can’t trust Labour.

“I am standing to give a voice to my community – the community that made me and has put their faith in me.”

According to the BBC,

She said she had been “penalised for describing my experiences of Islamophobia” and claimed there was a “hierarchy of racism” in the Labour Party, adding she had “been prevented from speaking out” on issues including Palestine.
