The Donald Trump assassination attempt could change politics in the UK, where a debate is already under way about the abuse and intimidation of politicians.
If you’ve been under a rock during the weekend: former US President, and presumptive Republic candidate in this year’s election, Donald Trump was the intended victim of an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Trump said a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear before he was led to his vehicle by members of the Secret Service.
The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, who was shot dead by Secret Service agents during the incident.

Sadly, by the time this happened, Crooks had already apparently shot dead one attendee and critically injured two others.
This could have serious repercussions for politics in the United Kingdom.
Here, home secretary Yvette Cooper is being pressed to investigate the abuse and intimidation of candidates during the recent general election, amid fears that there may have been a co-ordinated campaign by extremists.
During the election campaign, candidates reported a hammer attack on their office, masked men interrupting a community meeting, tyres being slashed and MPs being filmed and followed.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage had a milkshake and other objects thrown at him during the campaign, and several MPs reported harassment and attempted intimidation of them and their supporters.
Interestingly, the BBC reported that “Labour lost votes to pro-Palestinian candidates, angry with the party’s position on the Israel-Gaza conflict”, as though this was also intimidation and not a genuine expression of political opinion.
Former Labour MP, now peer, John Woodcock (“Lord Walney”!) said evidence suggests a “concerted campaign by extremists to create a hostile atmosphere for MPs within their constituencies to compel them to cave into political demands”.
He has previously called on ministers to update and extend the ways in which politicians and Parliament are protected. Now he is suggesting the new government might go further.
Any such moves could have a serious “damping” effect on democracy here.
Think about it; if moves are brought in to screen who gets to talk to our MPs, we could find ourselves excluded from seeing them simply for expressing an opinion on – well, on the Israel-Gaza conflict, since the BBC mentioned it. The flimsiest of excuses could be used to deny us a voice.
Meanwhile, corporate and foreign lobbyists may still receive a free pass into the ears of our representatives – with nobody to provide a counter-argument to their self-interested demands.
Be warned: your way of life is under threat because of this.
