This video is a lot more topical than Gary Stevenson may have expected

With the first report of Baroness Hallett’s Covid-19 Inquiry out this week, this video is a lot more topical than Gary Stevenson may have expected.

It’s the fourth anniversary of the launch of his YouTube channel, so he took the opportunity to revisit the very first video clip he made for it, which was about – guess what? – the government’s efforts to mitigate the financial effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Those effects were much worse than they should have been, Baroness Hallett has said. And this means that the effects Gary described in his original clip were magnified several times.

Here’s what he had to say:

So there it is. We can see that he was absolutely right.

In a nutshell: the government paid the living expenses of a majority of people, meaning the rich business owners, who usually did that, didn’t have to – while continuing to accrue wealth from what the majority were spending on their everyday living expenses. So the rich became massively richer, the government went into serious debt (mostly to itself because it created most of the money it used), and the poor got poorer because furlough money was only 80 per cent of their normal wages.

The extra money the richest in society picked up because of Covid-19 may therefore be described as windfall cash.

Considering what the government has done to energy companies that made extraordinary profits on the back of increased gas and oil prices from 2022 onwards, one has to ask why the super-rich have not been asked to pay a windfall tax of their own.

Alternatively, what can be done to restore the balance?
