Water firms have been blocked from using customer cash to pay bonuses

Will water companies pay high compensation for poor service?

They’re already being threatened with huge fines for their failures, so will water companies pay high compensation for poor service?

The minimum payment for most failings would double to £40, but the government is also proposing that customers may be able to claim back at least a quarter of their annual water and sewerage bill for poor service – the definition of which will expand to include failing to carry out meter readings or installations as promised.

Also added to the list will be so-called boil notices, when people are told they must boil water before drinking it or cooking with it – meaning outages in Brixham and Bramley earlier this year would have automatically led to compensation for all customers, where there was no entitlement previously.

And payments for certain highly disruptive incidents, such as failing to provide notice of supply interruptions and missing arranged appointments with customers, will also be doubled.

Above the £40 minimum payment, the government is proposing up to £250 for low pressure, and as much as £2,000 for internal flooding from sewers.

You can read the full list of standards companies are expected to meet in the Guaranteed Standards Scheme which sets a baseline for customer service in the water sector – or just copy the link for use if you need it.

They include providing timely restoration of water supply following an interruption, responding to written complaints and managing the risk of sewer flooding.

This will the first time the amounts offered in reimbursement to customers have changed since 2000 – 24 years ago.

Shouldn’t they be automatically upticked in line with inflation?
