The union-bashing Torygraph is scraping the barrel with its latest accusation against the organisations that represent working people.
The claim is that attempts to restore wages to their level before the Conservatives (and Liberal Democrats) came into office and attacked them in 2010 will only encourage unions to strike in order to get more.
But this is nonsense. The Telegraph‘s (to give it its proper title) own article explains that Mick Whelan of train drivers’ union Aslef said he was uncomfortable with Labour cutting winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners.
This was clearly what he meant when he said trade unions will “never be content” – there will always be choices by governments with which unions will disagree, and they will want to campaign on those issues.

But it seems to This Writer that it would be inappropriate for Aslef to strike over winter fuel payments because this would not affect its members; it would be a matter over which the union would want to lend the weight of its opinion, in order to sway that of the public and MPs.
He also said the UK having the lowest pensions in Europe was also a matter of shame for government.
The Torygraph quoted him directly as follows:
“What can we do? Well, we can do what we’ve always done. We can campaign, we can protest, we can stand there, we can articulate the voices of the people that we represent, our unions, our families, our unions, what we believe, but then we’ve got to build upon it,” he said.
“So I’m not too worried about the ‘what if’ moment, if I’m honest, because even if we only got 40 per cent of what’s being promised, we’re 40 years better than we’ve been in the past.”
He added: “So I am quite… not content, ’cos I’ll never be content, I’m an argumentative b*****. You might have gathered that. And the movement will never be content.”
It isn’t what the headline and introductory paragraph of the Torygraph‘s story were telling us, is it? We have to be vigilant against this misleading nonsense.
