Are anti-vaxxers harming the NHS?
As UK doctors call on the public to get vaccinated this autumn, to prevent a “tripledemic” of flu, Covid-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), This Writer is moved to ask: are anti-vaxxers harming the NHS?
People have been proclaiming their opposition to vaccination for many years – and normally, I would say it’s their right to deny themselves protection against diseases if they want, especially as sometimes vaccines seem not to work as well as we are told to expect them to (and yes, I’m choosing my words very carefully).
Anti-vaxxers became extremely vocal at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and questions were asked then about whether their refusal to take the medicines that were rushed into production at the time was harmful to an already-overloaded health service.
Now we are being warned about a triple threat that is likely to attack our health – and therefore the health service – during the autumn and winter.
The Evening Standard has reported the words of NHS bigwigs who said it was vital that everybody who is eligible should book in for injections against the three diseases.
The article elaborates,
Millions of Britons will this winter receive a jab for RSV, which can cause serious illness in young children and elderly people.
Officials suggest the RSV programme could prevent thousands of hospital admissions for babies and elderly people, easing pressure on the NHS in the run-up to the winter months.
The jab has been available to women from 28 weeks of pregnancy since September 1.
Adults turning 75 on or after September 1 are also eligible to receive the jab… The vaccine will be offered to people over 65, care home residents, people with pre-existing health conditions as well as frontline health workers.
It would be good to know how many anti-vaxxers ended up in hospital with Covid-19 during the pandemic (or, conversely, how many were not harmed by it at all), in order to gauge whether their protestations have any validity.
The trouble is, it seems hard to get accurate figures.
The broader context shows that a significant portion of severe COVID-19 cases and deaths occurred among unvaccinated individuals. For instance, during peaks of the pandemic, a large percentage of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units were unvaccinated.
So the question arises: what will happen now that this “tripledemic” is on the horizon?

Perhaps it is not black and white. My husband has sepsis type reactions to some vaccinations . Temperatures in the high thirtynine fourties, no coordination, unable to get out of bed to urinate. after some vaccination s, including covid and flu immunisations. This means we have to plan our vaccinations so we have no obligations for at least a week. The medical profession do not seem to take this seriously. we report every bad reaction. They seem to think a serious reaction like this is in our imagination. Perhaps everytime it happens we should call an ambulance! we did seek medical help the first time, because he was just getting over a bout of sepsis and we were afraid he had a recurrence. It was the flu vaccination he had had.
What a load of rubbish. You’re either highly ignorant, or a paid shill. Either way – you’re a mug.
What do the rest of you think?
For context, I think “John” here might be a pseudonym – the full name in the email address is John Smith. Should we really be paying any attention to someone who hides behind a fake name?
