Starmer’s austerity line is blown: ‘It’s like George Osborne’, says John McDonnell

Keir Starmer’s austerity line is blown: ‘It’s like George Osborne’, says John McDonnell – and as a former Shadow Chancellor, he should know.

The intervention comes at a terrible time for the prime minister, because he is trying to lighten Labour’s message, leavening the gloom and doom of recent months with some crumbs of optimism for peasants like you and me.

So he is expected to repeat his commitment to economic growth, mentioning specific policies. He’ll restate a commitment to get net migration down, while upskilling local workers with more flexible apprenticeships, among other things. He will also hold out the prospect of greater investment in the public services.

And there will be new legislation aimed to reduce fraud in the benefits system. This Writer believes reducing tax evasion and avoidance by the super-rich would be a better investment, and this is simply Starmer displaying his Tory sympathies.

And now John McDonnell has blatantly compared Starmer and his people with one of the worst Tory chancellors of our times.

“If you close your eyes and listen to the language being used, it’s almost like George Osborne speaking again in 2010,” he said on Radio 4’s Today programme.

“The rhetoric of ‘tough choices, painful decisions’ – it’s literally replica of a speech made by George Osborne.”

And he added that Labour “can’t say they’re ending austerity if they’re cutting the winter fuel allowance”.

This is true – and a hugely sore point, as the decision to push a debate and vote on the decision back to the very end of the conference advertises all-too-clearly.

From this intervention we can surmise that Mr McDonnell is not particularly concerned about rejoining the Labour Party from which he was suspended for voting to scrap the two-child benefit cap.

It is good to see that some MPs have Labour principles, even if they’re being kicked out of the Labour Party.
