She’s been busted over her ‘economist’ lie – but should Rachel Reeves resign?
The simple answer is ‘no’. Or at least, not yet.
Fair enough – she has attracted heat over her claim to have been an economist at (among other places) HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland).
In fact, it seems she worked in a small support unit within the complaints department at the bank, helping to manage administration processes, IT matters, and small projects and planning.

Inquiries with her team revealed no denial that she did not work as an economist at the bank, but “covered various areas using her economist background”.
So she is an economist and did use that training in her work. Isn’t that reasonable?
Even if it isn’t, she doesn’t actually need to have been an economist to be Chancellor of the Exchequer.
George Osborne was a History graduate and he was Chancellor for six years. And yes – look what a mess he made of it.
That’s the way to get her out, of course; wait for her policies to fail and then call her out on those failures.
That hasn’t happened yet – but after her Budget and other finance-related announcements, some are saying it’s just a matter of time.
